Communities of missionary disciples going forth in joy to share the Good News of God's love. We're on a mission to discover God's love and share it with others. The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers were founded almost 100 years ago to animate and support the Catholic Church in the U.S. to live up to its baptismal call to participate in the Christ's mission to bring the Good News of God's love to the world.
This year at the LA Congress we will have a drawing for folks to sign up for a FREE subscription to our award winning monthly magazines, MARYKNOLL or REVISTA, and enter a FREE drawing for an Acer Aspire One Netbook. The drawing will be held Sunday Mar. 1st at the end of the LA Congress.
Tuesday Jan 20th was truly a day of change and miracles! While our new president, Barack Obama was embracing his new role and new home, Matt, Marie, and Kris moved the San Leandro office to its new home at St. John's parish in San Lorenzo. What's the miracle you ask? We got the whole office moved in one day, no major damage, no injuries, just a lot of sweat and fatigue! But we're working hard to get everything up and running and thanks to our volunteers, we'll be in good shape before Feb 1. We're looking forward to hosting our next East Bay Affiliates meeting on the 27th at 7pm. Stop by soon and see what's new with us!
This past weekend, deacons and wives of deacons from around the U.S. met at Maryknoll in New York for a retreat and to talk about how deacons can become more engaged in mission. Herb, Peggy and I were part of this great group. With us was theologian and author Fr. Roger Schoeder and we used his book, What is the Mission of the Church? as our guide. There was great excitement and enthusiasm for mission and stay tuned for more...
From Rich...the next meeting of the Bay Area Maryknoll Affiliates Meeting is on Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 11 AM to 1 PM in the Pedro Arrupe Room in the basement of St Ignatius Church on the corner of Fulton and Parker Streets next to USF. Please remember Bob and Nancy McFarland in your prayers. They left for Thailand and Burma for two months on Sunday. Also remember Pat and Ilona Helmholz and George and Michelle Otte who are on their way to mission in Africa. See you on the 24th. God Bless.
Pat and Ilona Helmholz are Maryknoll Lay Missioners who are preparing for their 3 year mission to Kenya. Ilona fractured her leg late last year. Here's an update on her progress...
"On doctor’s advice, we have postponed our departure for Kenya until January 16 to allow for more healing on Ilona’s leg before getting on an airplane. Although we will start language training two weeks behind the rest of the class, I am comfortable we have made the right decision. The bone fracture seems to be healing normally and, at this point, see no reason for further concern. We will keep you informed of progress along the way. Peace and blessings for the New Year! -Pat"
Please keep the Helmholz's in your prayers for a successful journey to Kenya!
Attached are a couple of pictures from a farewell dinner the Maryknoll Affiliates held for Fr. John Soltis. After being in Hawaii for eight years, he’ll by departing for California on January 6, 2009 to be closer to family.
